Directories are websites that lists all types of sites in one place listing them under various categories. Directories serve a very important purpose in bringing all types of sites on the web together. They categorise the information or websites under different categories and helps finding and sorting the information easier on the net. Google is a big example of an online directory. Though it is a little different from the traditional ones, as you don't really browse the listing under categories but search the information you are looking for by inputting the search string in a search box.

There are many other directories on the net providing listing services and they are growing by the day.
Some interesting websites I found includes Ray Templates which is like a directory of free Blogger templates and it also provides free Wordpress themes too. It has over 300+ Blogger templates and it is increasing by the day. Amrit Ray blog is also a good resource for interesting stuff including photos, articles, and tips for designers etc.
