    Understanding the digital agency landscape

Before starting your own digital agency, it’s crucial to understand the current landscape of the industry. The digital business landscape is constantly evolving, with new technologies and trends emerging all the time. Perhaps, being in a digital world you will soon realize how fast technology evolves, and that it becomes quite an overwhelming task to stay abreast with all the latest tools and technologies in your field. It does not take time for what you know to become outdated and obsolete fast. As a result, it’s important to stay up-to-date on the latest developments and be adaptable to change.

One of the biggest trends in the industry right now is the shift towards mobile-first marketing. Literally, everyone is hooked to their smartphones and tablets these days, be it is for entertainment, to access the internet, or for any other reasons. Therefore, it is essential for digital agencies to prioritize mobile optimization in their strategies. Additionally, there’s been a growing emphasis on data-driven marketing, with agencies leveraging analytics and insights to make more informed decisions.

However, with these changes come new challenges. For example, the rise of ad-blockers has made it more difficult for agencies to reach their target audiences through traditional methods. Additionally, the increasing importance of data privacy means that agencies need to be more transparent in their use of consumer data. Nonetheless, the digital marketing industry remains a lucrative and growing field, with plenty of opportunities for new agencies to succeed.

The benefits of starting a digital agency

There are several benefits to starting your own digital agency. Firstly, it allows you to have complete control over your work and the direction of your career. As an agency owner, you’ll have the freedom to choose your clients and projects, as well as the ability to shape your own company culture.

Additionally, starting a digital agency can be highly profitable. With the rise in the demand for digital services, there’s a growing demand for agencies that can provide quality services to businesses of all sizes. As a result, there’s plenty of potential for agencies to scale and grow their revenue over time.

Finally, starting a digital agency can be a deeply fulfilling experience. By helping businesses succeed by helping them develop a brand and through effective marketing, you’ll be making a tangible impact on their success. This can be incredibly rewarding and provide a sense of purpose in your work.

Common challenges faced by digital agencies

While there are many benefits to starting a digital agency, there are also several challenges that you’re likely to face. One of the biggest challenges is competition. With so many digital agencies out there, it can be difficult to stand out and attract clients.

Another challenge is keeping up with the constant changes and developments in the industry. As mentioned earlier, the digital marketing landscape is always evolving, and agencies need to be adaptable and stay up-to-date in order to remain competitive and relevant.

Finally, managing a team can also be a significant challenge. As your agency grows, you’ll need to hire and manage employees, which can be time-consuming and complex.

Running a business is complex, whether it is offline or an online digital one. From taking care of the internal nitty gritty of running a business to marketing in an effort to reach your potential customers, these tasks take a lot of time, energy and effort.

Despite these challenges, with the right strategies and mindset, it’s possible to overcome them and build a successful digital agency.

Steps to starting a digital agency

Now that we’ve covered some of the basics of the digital agency landscape, let’s dive into the steps you’ll need to take to start your own agency.

    Step 1: Identify your niche

One of the first things you’ll need to do is identify your niche. This means figuring out what specific area of digital marketing you’ll focus on. Some common niches include web design, web development, app development, graphic designing, branding, social media marketing, SEO, PPC advertising, email marketing, and content marketing.

It’s important to choose a niche that you’re passionate about and have experience in. This will help you stand out and provide high-quality services to your clients. Additionally, focusing on a specific niche can help you build a strong reputation and become known as an expert in your field.

    Step 2: Build a team

Once you’ve identified your niche, the next step is to build a team. This means hiring employees or contractors who can help you provide services to your clients.

When building your team, it’s important to hire people who are passionate, skilled, and aligned with your company culture. Additionally, you’ll need to provide ongoing training and support to help your team stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in your niche.

Step 3: Develop a strong brand

Building a strong brand is essential for any digital agency. Your brand is what sets you apart from your competitors and helps you attract and retain clients. To develop a strong brand, you’ll need to define your values, mission, and unique selling proposition. Additionally, you’ll need to create a visual identity, including a logo, color scheme, and website design, that reflects your brand personality.

Step 4: Create a compelling website

Your website is the very first impression your potential clients will have of your agency. It will embody your brand personality including your mission, vision, color scheme and logo and effectively represent your business online.

As such, it’s essential to create a website that’s professional, engaging, and optimized for conversions. Some key elements of a compelling digital agency website include clear messaging, easy navigation, high-quality visuals, and social proof, such as testimonials or case studies.

Step 5: Find and attract clients

Finally, you’ll need to find and attract clients to your agency. This is the step that finally starts bringing revenue to your business thus providing sustenance and fueling growth. This can involve a variety of tactics, including networking, attending events, content marketing, and paid advertising.

It’s important to create a sales and marketing strategy that’s tailored to your niche and target audience. Additionally, you’ll need to be persistent and consistent in your outreach efforts, as building a client base can take time and effort.

Managing and scaling your digital agency

Once you’ve successfully launched your digital agency, the next challenge is managing and scaling it. This involves managing your team, improving your processes, and growing your revenue over time.

One key strategy for managing your agency is to establish clear goals and metrics for success. This can help you stay focused and ensure that everyone on your team is working towards the same objectives.

Additionally, it’s important to continually evaluate and improve your processes and workflows. This can help you streamline your operations and provide better services to your clients.

  • How To Choose a Web Designer From Across the Globe

How To Choose a Web Designer From Across the Globe

A website is an important tool. It must be designed right, otherwise, you lose business & money. In fact, a website is more than that. It tells your potential customers who you are.  It is part of your branding.

The type of message you send out through the design and the content of your website showcases your work culture and ethics. Tells people a lot about who you and what it might be like interacting with you and doing business with you.

Then there are factors that determine how efficiently users can interact with your site. Is it easy to use your site? Are all essential features included? Can one find the information they are looking for easily? Is it easy to navigate your website? Are you using the right colors & typography? Is the theme well code for efficiency and speed?

These are a lot of questions, but it only scratches the surface of what it entails to design a great website.

Therefore, it is necessary to choose the right candidate as your web designer or design agency. We will go through some of the points to ensure you make the right choice.

Choosing the type of design agency

Websites can fall into various categories, each demanding a different skill set, knowledge & level of experience. In fact, different types of websites would demand different tools to complete them.

Some of the questions you should be asking are:

    • Is it a simple informative site?
    • Is it going to be a brochure or a catalogue for my products or services?
    • Is it a corporate website?
    • Is it primarily going to be a blog?
    • Is it going to be an ecommerce website?
    • Does my website need custom functionality?
    • Is it a web app?
    • Do I need custom software developed?

In other words, websites fall into different categories and demand different skillsets & approach.

A simple website can be made using just HTML, CSS, & JS.

Though today, even simple websites are built on top of CMS platforms, like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, etc.

To build a website like this, one needs knowledge about Content Management Systems, and how to extend them to build simple to complex websites. A design agency or a freelancer could take of this for you.

However, if your requirement is for an ecommerce website, you would approach an agency or a freelancer who also has some development skills along with designing knowledge.

If your requirement is custom software or a web app, you would contact a developer or a development company. So, the type of designer or agency you contact depends on the specific type of project you have.

    Local is not always better!

Must you choose a local web designer to ensure that your website is designed in an efficient way? That is indeed not a necessity today.

Over the years we have found that many businesses have this notion that if you haven’t met the web design agency in person, then many things could potentially go wrong if you choose them as your designer.

It could be true in some cases where you must absolutely meet face to face with the designer. But for the majority, you could very well choose to work with any web designer from across the globe.

Some of the advantages are that you are not restricted to locally few available options.

    • You could choose from the best out there as you have more choice.
    • You could save money with offshore companies, where labor tends to be cheaper.
    • When working with offshore companies, you tend to communicate more through emails, rather than using phone calls. Meeting in person is usually out of the question. It saves a lot of your precious time that otherwise would have been wasted in unnecessary & fruitless meetings.
    • Email communication keeps a written record of everything that you have discussed and agreed upon. Which, in my opinion, is a good thing to have.
    • Email communication is non-invasive, and you can choose to communicate at your own pace and convenience.

But of course, there are other reasons like if you believe working locally is the right thing to do. That you want to provide employment to local businesses. Then you should work locally. You should do what you believe in.

Is it a company or a freelancer?

Sometimes you need something very casual or simple. It doesn’t matter if it is not perfect. Or maybe you want to save some money by getting it done cheaply.

In such circumstances, you could choose to work with a freelancer. As they have fewer overheads and are willing to work for less.

However, a freelancer is a one-man army. Every aspect of the website will be taken care of by him only.  And usually, a freelancer is like a jack of all trades, master of none.

Reliability and support could also be an issue. He may or may not be around to provide you with support and maintenance.

On the contrary, agencies and web design companies have different people to take care of different tasks.

The graphic designer is enlisted with the task of creating graphics, illustrations, banners for the website. They specialize in tools like Photoshop & Illustrator.

The designer takes care of the design aspect of the website.

The developers take that design and bring it to life through code.

Marketing & SEO guys ensure greater visibility for your website.

So, when you work with an agency or a design company, there are a lot many specialized people working on your website. And you end up with a much better product.

You also get a lot more reliable support and maintenance.

But all this attention, care & quality comes at a cost. So, decide on what is important for you and whether you want to work with a freelancer or an agency.

    Is Support Available?

Check with them if support is available. And if yes, on what terms.

With many web designers, you can opt for a support & maintenance package. Which could be payable either monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or yearly.

Some companies could be charging a flat rate on an hourly basis.

Also, enquire about their turn around time. And everything that is included as a part of the website maintenance package. Ensuring what is including during the initial stages would go a long way in avoiding conflicts & disappointments later. Decide whether support is important. And choose an agency that fits your requirements.

    Is it a Legitimate Business?

Ensure the business is what they say they are.

A little bit of diligence is indeed needed in a business where many times we don’t even meet face to face before establishing a business relationship.

I say this with experience as there have been many times when we were awarded projects without having met up with the client.

So how do you ensure the legitimacy of a business?

    • You can check the number of years they claim to have been in business.
    • Check their official website. Also, check when their domain name was first booked by them. Has their domain existed for many years? If yes, then that is a good sign.
    • Check for their online reviews? If a business has been around for some time, then people would be talking about them. They should have some reviews.
    • What sentiments do the reviews reflect? Are they positive or negative? Too many negative reviews could be a sign of danger.
    • Check their website portfolio section. Go to those websites and see if their names are credited as the designer in any of them. Alternatively, you may wish to contact a few of the clients through email to see what kind of experience they had with them.

I believe these steps would give you a fair idea of the type of business they are. And whether you can trust them or not.

Personality & Culture of The Organization

I feel this is something that you need to pay attention too. Every organization has a culture that dictates the way they handle their clients and the unique challenges that arise during the web design process.

I feel this culture trickles down from top to bottom. It shows the cultural framework within which the company operates.

Many companies would go beyond to delight their customers.

Though this is not something that you can ascertain right away but speaking and interacting with the company personnel during the initial stages of contact should give you an idea of their working culture.

Combine that with the online reviews and you should have a strong opinion on whether you want to work with this company or not. If you strongly feel that this company is not for you. Then look elsewhere.

Is There a Limit to Design Revisions?

It may not sound like much, but it is an important factor to consider while choosing a web design agency for your project.

Your website is important, and you want the best design possible. It should be user friendly and should reflect what your business stands for.  But if there are limits to iterations, then you will be forced to accept something which could have been made better.

I don’t blame the design agencies for keeping a cap on the number of design alternation requests you can make. It is really to safeguard themselves from nasty clients. Yes, they do exist. And if they have their way, the designers will end up working for many months without producing any concrete results. Therefore, I do believe limiting design revisions is not a bad idea.

However, there are many design agencies out there that can filter out such irresponsible clients and pamper clients like yourself by offering unlimited design revisions. It is good to choose an agency that does not limit design revisions. That way you can have the peace of mind that if you are not satisfied with something, it will be worked upon until you are happy with the results.

    Exiting Work & Portfolio

This should really be your number one criterion for choosing a web design company.

The company may be big with lots of employees. They may have impressive office setup and infrastructure.

All this means is that they have invested well in their business, but it does not mean they have the creative flair that you are looking for. The designer may be missing that.

Similarly, a freelancer or a small design agency also does not guarantee the type of website you are looking for.

The number one thing that you want to look at would be their past work! How many websites have they built? What type of companies do they work with? Do you like their designs? Are their websites bringing results? Are their websites well coded, light, and fast? What do you think of the colour combinations? Do you see an artistic flair to their designs? Are they creative?

Their design portfolio and a list of their past clients would tell you whether they can do justice to your site. I believe if you are happy with this bit, then the other pieces would also fall into place. And you can safely choose such a design agency to work for you.

    Look for Testimonials

Just like their design portfolio, testimonials also tell you the kind of experience clients had working with a given design agency.

This is powerful, as it indicates what you could expect if you chose to work with them.

A few reviews could be biased, but when you combine all them of, then you get a collective idea, or indication of how your experience is going to be.

So, one or two negative reviews are okay. Because whatever you do, you cannot please everyone. And there could be some haters too, like competitors, who will deliberately give you a bad review, posing as a client, to bring down the agency’s credibility.

If there are overall positive reviews, I believe you are safe to work with them.

    Conclusion

The goal here is to be able to choose a good web design agency or a designer to fulfil your requirements for web design.

We have indeed discussed several points that would help you to narrow down your choice, so that it becomes easier to choose. And to ensure the choice is the right one.

  • 7 Essential Features You Must Include in Your New Website

7 Essential Features You Must Include in Your New Website

Most of us will come face to face with this situation sometimes. It is the decision to create a new website. Maybe it is the first one we are building. Or perhaps, we are redesigning an existing one?

Of course, our aim always is to create the best website possible. Though the definition of best is subjective and differs from person to person. However, there are certain characteristics, we can all agree, should be an important part of our websites.

These essential features will ensure that the website is effective and will able to perform the tasks expected of it.

Because what good is a website if it is unable to help you achieve your business objectives efficiently? Let us dive straight in and check out the features now.

#1. DIY Vs A Professionally Built Website

This is more of a decision that will likely impact the future of your business than a built-in feature of your website. But since it is such an important step, I decided to include it on the list.

So, for many, the first decision would be whether to build the site on your own as a Do-It-Yourself project. Or whether to hand over the responsibility to a professional web design company or firm!

The decision would likely rest on many factors like:

    • Are you a business?
    • Does this website need to be highly professional?
    • Do you have lots of free time?
    • Do you have time to learn and experiment with technology?
    • Are you looking to save money?
    • You do not have money?

If you have lots of free time and are willing to put in the time to learn and grasp new technology. And, if you do not have money and do not need the best website possible instantly, then you could surely take the DIY route.

You could use a Free Website Builder like Webnode, Wix, or Weebly to build your website. However, they are not entirely free.

The moment you try to get some utility out of it, like adding your domain, you would be expected to switch to a paid account. Which is usually a nominal amount that you are expected to pay every month.

So basically, they are inexpensive ways to create websites that are not so professional.

On the other hand, if you are a business, you need a professional website. You need to think of the expense incurred in hiring professionals as an investment in your business.

It is something that will get returned to you many folds as your business yields higher returns.

A professional web designer can design using pleasing colors bringing focus to areas that need them. Using white spaces to maintain that minimalist look and to break up sections. Use CTAs to increase conversions. To know about the latest design trends. Smart use to typography, etc.

You cannot expect to achieve this level of professionalism yourself as a DIY project.

Therefore, invest in a good web design company.

    #2. Choose A CMS

It is not a choice anymore whether to use a CMS or not. Rather the choice is which CMS to use as the backend of your website.

Many years back, people used to build websites using simple HTML, CSS & JS. They did serve their purpose but had many limitations.

If the sites grew larger, it became immensely cumbersome to maintain the sites. Each linking had to be manually updated. Suppose you have 25 pages in a website, and you decided to add another page. This new page would then need to be manually linked from all the other 25 pages.

One would need to update all the pages and upload them to the webserver.

Luckily, Content Management Systems (CMS) came along, and managing a vast number of pages became immensely easy.

Let’s list a few of the Content Management Systems available to you today:

    And many more…

I listed WordPress at the top for a reason. Because it is the most widely used CMS today. It is very much ahead of all the other CMS platforms and commands a staggering 63.3% of all CMS market share.

It powers approx. 36% of all websites on the internet. That is indeed a huge success for any CMS to accomplish.

I am a big proponent of using WordPress over other CMS platforms. Partly because of my own experience with it. It is an indeed powerful CMS and the best part is, it is FREE to use in whatever way you like.

It has a fabulous ecosystem of developers & users helping each other. Creating more modules & plugins that can be used to extend and add more functionality.

This is an especially important aspect of choosing a platform for your new website. Because you want to be sure that new developments will keep happening. And that you are future-ready with your website.  The important thing here is to choose a CMS that will be at the core of your website.

#3. Responsive / Mobile Friendly Website

A responsive layout is one that automatically adjusts to the width of the screen on which the website is being viewed.

The concept is like water in a container. If you pour some fluid in a container of various shapes and sizes, the fluid adjusts and takes the shape of the container itself.

The same happens with a responsive website.

The content arranged in different grids on a web page slides up or down, adjusts their own width & height, including the size of the font, to fit optimally in the available viewing space. This, in turn, creates an optimal viewing experience for the end-user.

Most of your customers are on mobile these days. And mobiles come in various shapes and sizes. To ensure that all your website visitors have a comfortable experience on your website, it is absolutely a must to ensure that your new website is Responsive. Or in other words, mobile-friendly.

Google has stated that investing in a mobile-friendly site is critical, as they show up higher in search results.

In the same article, they also state that more than 50% of all searches on Google are done through mobile phones. And that if your site is not mobile-friendly, then your visitors are 5 times more likely to abandon and leave your site. When you are designing your new site, ensure that this feature is included and is going to be a part of your new website.

    #4. Secure With HTTPS

Google in this update mentioned that beginning in Jan 2017 the Chrome browser will mark sites as insecure if you collect sensitive data like passwords or credit card information when your site does not have a valid SSL certificate.

However today all sites that do not have a valid SSL Certificate, i.e. sites not secured with HTTPS would show a not secure warning in Chrome browsers.

It is not a pretty sign and shows your website in a bad light. It says that you do not care about privacy or in protecting your website visitors when they are on your site.

It is also known to be an SEO factor. That is something that would impact how your site is displayed in search results. It is obvious of course, that sites secured with HTTPS would be promoted and insecure sites will get demoted.

The good news is that securing your site with SSL has become a breeze today. Many web hosts provide free SSL certificates that are part of their offerings.

This will help you in securing the communication between your website and your online visitors. Make sure that the website is designed keeping this feature in mind from the beginning.

    #5. Original & Impactful Content

Content is the heart of your website. It is through the content that you communicate with your audience. Therefore, it is important to give adequate time in planning and creating the content that will help convert your online visitors into customers.

    Plan your important pages

Make a list of the important pages you plan to have on your website. The first landing page, is of course, the homepage. So, one needs to plan and write up the different sections that this important page will have.

The other important pages you might want to include are:

    • About
    • Contact
    • Services or Products
    • Testimonials
    • Request a Quote
    • Privacy Policy
    • Terms & Conditions

These are some of the standard pages you would usually find on any site. You, of course, would need other pages to explain your business in a more efficient way.

    Use Original Images & videos

Many people are quick to use free stock images on their website. While it does serve the purpose and, in many instances, it would be okay to use them too. However, there is nothing better than using original images of your business and work environment.

If you have it, then flaunt it. There is nothing that can create more trust than the original images & videos of your workplace. Your business employees working in a neat & clean, comfy surroundings can say so much about your work ethics and culture.

This video can go on the homepage header. Imagine the impact it would create on your visitors.

The Team section can have photos of the key members of your team with a little description of each of them that can go a long way in instilling the much-needed confidence in your online visitors. Such original imagery should be used throughout the website to create a personalized touch.

    Testimonials

Similarly, testimonials can work wonders in converting your visitors to customers. When someone lands on your website, they do not know about you or your business.

Keeping a section of reviews from your past customers acquaints your visitors with the kind of service they can expect from you.

    Social Proof

Your businesses’ social accounts say a lot about the legitimacy of your business. Therefore, it is a good idea to create your business profile pages on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.

When your visitors see that you have been around for quite some time. And they see your interactions with other fellow users, they know they can trust you. That you are a legitimate business. It can go a long way in increasing trust & sales.

    #6. Friendly Navigation

Next, we look at the importance of a good navigation system. Though this would most probably be taken care of by your website designers. But you can keep an eye to ensure that it is done properly.

Good navigation is of prime importance because it makes traversing your website easy. It goes a long way in creating a great user experience for the end-user. If they find the information they are looking for with ease, they are likely to interact and stay on your site for longer.

Ideally, you would keep your most important pages linked from the top header menu. Usually, the top landing pages would be always visible in the header menu system. And subpages can be linked from the dropdown menu that rolls down when you hover over the main menu items.

This helps to cut down on clutter and yet highlight the important sections of the website.

The footer menu would usually have links to the pages that important but are not the primary landing pages. These would include Privacy, Terms & Conditions, Contact, Newsletter signups, social icons, contact information, and all other such pages that did not find a place on the primary header menu.

Ensure that all pages can be reached within a few clicks from the homepage itself. The more discoverable a page it, the more visitors it will receive.

    Internal Linking

This is yet another form of powerful navigation when you link to your internal pages from the website content itself. It lets users find meaningful pages as they go through your website content. One must link to their internal pages frequently in this way.

    Search Bar

Include a search bar on your website. This can be conveniently placed either in the header, the sidebar or the footer.

When a site grows large, it becomes increasingly difficult to find pieces of content or information on a site. This could be frustrating for the end-user. A search bar is convenient and extremely easy to place. And therefore, it should be a must on every site.

All in all, a good navigation system makes finding information easier and therefore more user friendly.

    #7. Include a Blog

When we create a website, we do it so that our customers can look us up on the net and find the much-needed information about us from the comfort of their homes.

There is another reason. That is to reach potential customers who do not know about our business yet! And this is where a blog comes in.

You share your expertise on your blog in the form of articles. In turn, not only do you help others, but it creates awareness about your business too.

Suppose you are a baker and you have a local store. You bake bread & cookies. You can write articles on how to bake the best bread at home; The different types of bread one can make.

You can also write about cookies. You can describe the cookies you have in your bakery. There is so much you can share on your blog.

When people search for similar information, your article will help them. At the same time, they will learn about your business too.
